This Roman-era city is significant in Christian history as the recipient of Saint Paul’s Epistle to the Colossians, written around AD 60-65. Although Paul never visited Colossae himself, his message was delivered by Epaphras, a native of the city. Notable early Christians like Philemon and Onesimus were part of this community (Col. 4:9; Philem. 10, 23).

Our next stop is Laodicea (modern Denizli), one of the Seven Churches of Revelation (Rev. 3:14-22). Next, we continue to Salihli to visit Sardis, the once-great capital of Lydia during the 6th century B.C. Known in Revelation as the “dying church,” Sardis offers an array of captivating ruins. Highlights include the grand Temple of Artemis, the Temple of Cybele (later repurposed as a Byzantine church), the beautifully reconstructed Sardis Synagogue, and the restored Gymnasium. Thyatira, one of the Seven Churches of Asia Minor mentioned in the Bible (Rev. 1:11; 2:18-24), is noted as the hometown of Lydia, a wealthy merchant of purple dye and a devout worshiper of God, whom the Apostle Paul met during his mission in Philippi (Acts 16:14).

Our journey continues to Bergama, the site of ancient Pergamon, located approximately 90 km away. After enjoying lunch at a local restaurant, we’ll explore Pergamon, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Pergamon was a powerful and influential city that flourished after the death of Alexander the Great in 323 B.C. and later became part of the Roman Empire in 133 B.C. Day 11: ASSOS & ALEXANDRIA TROAS TOUR

Assos, an ancient city dating back to the Bronze Age (3000-1200 B.C.), is nestled on the slopes of a volcanic hill overlooking Edremit Bay, with breathtaking views across to Lesbos Island. The Temple of Athena, perched at the summit, offers a serene and majestic atmosphere, providing sweeping vistas of the surrounding landscapes. During his third missionary journey, Saint Paul traveled from Alexandria Troas to Assos, covering a distance of about 32 kilometers on foot (Acts 20:5-6, 13-14), where he met his companions at the city’s northwest gate. From Assos, Paul and his group sailed to Mitylene on Lesbos Island, continuing their journey to Jerusalem.

Our next stop is Alexandria Troas, located near modern-day Çanakkale. Founded by Antigonus in the late 4th century B.C., Alexandria Troas is mentioned several times in the Bible. Saint Paul spent time here on his second missionary journey before traveling to Macedonia (Acts 16:9), and later preached here during his third missionary journey (Acts 20:6-10). The city is also referenced in 2 Corinthians 2:12 and 2 Timothy 4:13, and remains a titular see for the Roman Catholic Church.

The Second Council of Nicaea, held at the Hagia Sophia in İznik, was the final ecumenical council, addressing key theological issues between Orthodox and Catholic Christianity.
